Young Nigerian Lawyer Earns Master’s Degree from Oxford University, Celebrates Remarkable Achievement

AFRICA | A young Nigerian Lawyer bags masters degree at Oxford University, celebrates unique achievement.

A young Nigerian Lawyer named Edidiong Umoh has bagged a master’s degree from the University of Oxford, in the United Kingdom.

Edidiong bagged a Master of Business Administration at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, an achievement she shared on her LinkedIn highlighting her success and reflecting on her educational journey.

She began her undergraduate studies at Afe Babalola University where she bagged her Bachelor of Law after which she proceeded to the Nigerian Law School and was awarded her Barrister at Law Certificate.

Edidiong said she worked as an attorney at A.O. Alegeh & Co. and as a regulatory services consultant at Andersen in Nigeria for a while before she decided to pursue an MBA at the prestigious Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.

Fortunately, she won a full scholarship from the Mastercard Foundation and the Saïd Foundation Scholarship which backed her decision. Edidiong said she began the MBA program with eagerness and an open mind and she emerged from the program stronger, better, and a different person.

She stated that while she expected to learn about strategy, business finance, and entrepreneurship, she also gained valuable insights into culture, community, relationships, ethics, and friendship.

Edidiong said she found it surreal to take modules from various fields and learn from top faculty members and she gained knowledge from the interesting and passionate professors at the university.

She said she witnessed brilliance, knowledge, curiosity, compassion, diverse perspectives, and unique teaching methods rooted in kindness and a firm belief in our joint capacity to change the world for the better through the professors and lecturers who taught her.

She described the MBA program as a masterpiece with over 300 classmates, 60 countries, 20 courses, 3 terms, several professors and study groups, meetings, and presentations.

Edidiong mentioned that she was involved in various activities, including leading the Oxford Africa Business Alliance, organizing events, and planning the MBA Ball and Africa Night. She said she is grateful for the experiences and opportunities she gained.

As she embarks on her next journey, she references a few lines in ‘The Mock Turtle’s Song’ from Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Caroll (a former scholar at Christ Church College in Oxford).

”What matters is how far we go?”. There is another shore, you know, upon the other side. The further off from England the nearer is to France— Then turn not pale, beloved snail, but come and join the dance?”

The quote suggests that the distance traveled does not matter as long as there is a new and exciting destination ahead. Edidiong encourages herself to embrace whatever comes her way with positivity.
